Bonnyrigg High School opened in term two with new gardens completed thanks to a $5000 donation from Newleaf Communities and the efforts of the Green Wings team and its horticulture trainees.
Green Wings is a $1.8 million Federally-funded project run by Newleaf Communities. It is designed to gear businesses in and around Bonnyrigg towards sustainable industries.
It will:
• Create 55 new jobs in environmental and sustainable industries.
• Provide employment and training in job-ready green skills; and
• Contribute to environmental sustainability in the Newleaf Bonnyrigg redevelopment.
The High School project is one of a number of on-the-job training projects for trainees on the Green Wings program. The horticulture trainees learn aspects of landscaping, gardening and maintenance to give them skills for the future.
During the school holidays, the Green Wings trainees re-conditioned the soil of 12 planter boxes with fertilisers, organic material and wetter granules, before planting a range of small plants and spreading decorative mulch on the surface.
The end result demonstrates how a little foliage and garden maintenance goes a long way in enhancing school’s appearance.
Bonnyrigg High School Principal Michael Bryce was delighted with the way the planter boxes looked.
“The planter boxes were unused, and the new plants have really brightened up previous barren areas,” Mr Bryce said.
Green Wings trainee Beau Cross was happy to work on the planter box project at the local school:
“It’s good to be able to give something back to the community while I’m learning skills for my future,” he said.
Bonnyrigg High School students will also have an opportunity to be involved, as the school’s environment committee has been given the task of maintaining and watering the planter boxes.
“By getting the students involved in looking after the planter boxes, hopefully they’ll continue to maintain the look of the new gardens,” Cross said.
Newleaf General Manager Claudia Stevens said the donation was part of a community renewal program for the now semi-selective school.
“We’re really happy to see the partnership developing between Newleaf and the Bonnyrigg High School,” Ms Stevens said.
“We are looking forward to working on future projects together.”
The remainder of the $5000.00 will used for another Green Wings garden project in the school set for a later date.
